The Charming East Coast of Scotland
East Coast of Scotland: medieval castles, the North Sea, peaceful villages and whisky
A wonderfully relaxing day out, full of historic and natural beauty. First, we explore the Scottish countryside with its green fields. Then we head for the stunning East Coast of Scotland, washed by the North Sea. Honestly, we simply love this tour!
Medieval castles and the Bass Rock
Always accompanied by a historian guide who knows the area like no one else, we visit 13th-century Hailes Castle, once home to powerful Scottish nobles. Next, we see Dirleton, also from the 13th century and famous for its magnificent gardens.
Finally, we reach Tantallon, built in the mid-14th century on the edge of a cliff. From here, the view of the Bass Rock is spectacular. After all, this volcanic plug is a true paradise for seabirds, in a truly unforgettable setting.
Picturesque villages, Outlander and whisky
As well as the castles, on this private tour of the East Coast of Scotland we visit picturesque villages. For example, charming North Berwick, with its 12th-century harbour and famous golf courses, although it has a dark past: the North Berwick witch trials. Haddington, Scotland’s oldest royal burgh, and Dunbar, a very picturesque fishing town, are also on the route.
In addition, wildlife lovers can take a boat trip on the North Sea to the Bass Rock and marvel at colonies of more than 150,000 seabirds.
Outlander fans, meanwhile, can visit idyllic Preston Mill (remember the mill at Lallybroch?), an 18th-century watermill that still works. Another curiosity is the 16th-century doocots — can you guess what they were for?
Finally, to make the day even more special, we can add an afternoon tea in a cosy tea room or a walk on one of the area’s beautiful beaches. And of course (we are in Scotland, after all!), the route can also include a single malt whisky tasting at a traditional distillery.
