National Museum of Scotland: discover Scotland’s history through remarkable artefacts
Led by our historian guide, who knows the collections of the National Museum of Scotland inside out, this guided tour is a unique chance to learn about the country’s history. After all, the museum’s collection brings together extraordinary artefacts from prehistory to modern times.
As we walk through the galleries, we will talk about Celtic warriors, medieval kings, pioneering inventors and life in the medieval burghs. In addition, we always connect historical events to the objects on display. That is why the tour follows a chronological order, in an educational and relaxed way that keeps everyone engaged.
From prehistory to the Middle Ages
First, the tour briefly covers Scotland’s geology and biodiversity. From there, we dive into Scottish prehistory, with tools and objects from the region’s first inhabitants. For example, the swords and shields of Celtic warriors, Roman artefacts and Viking bracelets.
Next, in the medieval era, you will be captivated by relics of the kings and queens who shaped Scotland, among them Mary, Queen of Scots. We will also see everyday objects from the medieval burghs and artefacts from the conflict between Catholics and Protestants, such as religious manuscripts, liturgical vestments and objects of worship.
From the Enlightenment to Dolly the Sheep
After that, the Scottish Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution are represented by pioneering inventions and scientific discoveries. Models of steam engines and medical and engineering instruments therefore show Scotland’s vital role in the progress of modern society.
Finally, the tour covers recent advances in biotechnology and genetics, such as the famous Dolly the Sheep. The experience ends with exhibitions on contemporary Scottish culture, from folk traditions to today’s art and science. To plan your visit, see also the museum’s official website.
Susana, your historian and specialist guide, worked at the National Museum of Scotland for three years, presenting its collections to visitors from many countries. Among the highlights was a visit by His Excellency Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, President of Mongolia, and his delegation, who were in Edinburgh for COP26 in 2021. On that occasion, Susana had the honour of leading them on a historical tour of the museum’s main galleries.
